The rural architectural elements in this neighborhood, which was only built up during the 1870s, were an answer to the urban aristocracy’s expensive “tenement palaces” downtown. And together with the quiet tree-line streets and plentiful greenery, these old villas and distinctive houses make up Döbling’s present-day Cottageviertel.

The nearby Türkenschanzpark is a popular place for students in Vienna to relax after long university days, and together with the Sternwarte Park, the Hugo-Wolf Park, and the Wertheimsteinpark, the entire area offers lots of space for lovers of the outdoors. The cycling paths on Brigittenauer Lände and through the upper Danube wetlands are perfect places for extended bike rides. And if you prefer to take things slower, the Spittelau railway station is the ideal place from which to catch a train to points northwest where you can go for leisurely hikes or a picnic. Are you fond of those panoramic views of Vienna that one sees on lots of postcards? Going towards Pötzleinsdorf, you soon reach the Schafberg and the Schwarzenberg, two hills from which a lot of these views were photographed.

Just a few subway stops away from the dorm is the WUK, which is home to one of Vienna’s nicest pub-like locations and offers a rich, year-round program of concerts and other cultural events. And the Volksoper is also always well worth a visit. Party animals will love the Gürtel, where all kinds of student bars, urban cafés, and clubs of Vienna line up side by side and students often get special deals. And for when you’re after something a bit more rustic, Döbling boasts lots of wine cellars and garden restaurants where you can enjoy food specialties and wines from the region.
